The Landscape and Heritage Group is for anyone with a general interest in history and how the local and wider landscapes have evolved. In particular, we look at the impact of industry and agriculture on the development of towns and villages from prehistoric times to the present day. Derbyshire and its neighbouring counties are particularly rich in interesting and varied places to visit under the guidance of either members of the group or local experts. In addition to looking at the influence of humans on the landscape, we also visit natural geological features.

This year's highlights have included visits to the Anderton Boat Lift and Speke Hall in Liverpool as well as guided tours of Croxden Abbey and Ilam. In the past, we have visited one of the last factories making buttons from mother of pearl, Sinai Park House near Burton, some of which dates back to the fourteenth century and to Loughborough to visit the last working bell foundry in Britain.

We have had a "behind the scenes" tour of the Matlock Record Office, looked at veteran trees in the landscape at Kedleston Park, and had guided tours of Leek, Uttoxeter Market Place, Rocester and Ashbourne Church. We also did a circular walk to Roystone Grange and Minninglow Hill. Visits are very sociable and walks are taken at a relaxed pace. During the winter months, we hold indoor meetings at Mayfield Memorial Hall to look at topics which interest members. In the past, these have included the Impact on the Landscape of the Eighteenth Century Droving Trade.

Our meetings are usually on the morning of the third Friday of the month, although this may be changed to accommodate venue opening times etc. During the winter, speaker meetings are held at 10.15 for 10.30 am in Mayfield Memorial Hall. In the summer we have a programme of visits.
Ideas for future meetings are always welcome.
If there is somewhere you would like to visit, please let us know.
