There is a steady climb up then a slightly quicker descent back to the pub for lunch. From the Best Peak District Walks. Click Here for OS Route Map. And for photograph lovers, the dark skies make for some impressive starry night photos of Magpie Mine. The walk then goes via farm land to reach Magpie Mine at the highest point on the walk. Once you’ve explored the old mine, it’s back to Sheldon and a gradual descent via Great Shacklow Woods to the River Wye, where you follow it back to the start at Ashford-in-the-Water and lunch at the Aisseford Tea Room

Wednesday 23 Oct 2024 - Peter W (Brian Stockdale) : Initially generally fairly flat walk westwards along tracks to enter the southern end of Horseshoe Dale, then turning north to gradually descend ½ mile along the grassy dale past the bottom of Back Dale to continue down the narrow & rocky Deep Dale to join the Midshires Way after 1/3 mile. A steep ascent along a narrow stony path leads eastwards out of Deep Dale back along the Way over fairly level terrain to Chelmorton where we pass the pub after 3 ½ miles to continue up an initially fairly steep path to a generally level open area to join the Pennine Bridleway south along tracks & lanes leading to a grassy descent with good views back to the pub. Inevitably some stiles. Possibly some muddy areas. One advantage of “a figure of 8” walk based around the pub is if weather conditions deteriorate! 5.5-miles: 2 hours 45 minutes. We have never walked to & along Horseshoe Dale or this part of Deep Dale. We took the steep path out of it along Midshires Way back to the pub in heavy rain on 6/5/15 when walking from the north. The 1st section of the walk was published in Derbyshire Life about 10 years ago. We walked the 2nd section on 10/8/16.

Go over the bridge and up hill on the the road for about 250 yards then take the slightly uphill footpath on the left to look over the river fish ponds and return to the pub. There are around 6 stiles on the walk, some easy squeeze ones. On the recce, two fields had cows in but even though we had the dogs with us they ignored us. One field had recently been harvested so we hope it won't be ploughed on the day! On the recce it took about two and three quarter hours without rushing so the hotel is booked to arrive at the pub for lunch for 1pm.

We then turn to the east on this for about half a mile until we reach a junction and then proceed along a quiet minor road for a third of a mile before making a detour S.W. across some more fields, before going down the same steep slope and back to the village again. Wednesday – 22nd November 2023 –Dimmingsdale in its Autumn Glory
Approximate Distance: 5.0 miles but this can easily be shortened if you want to or the weather is bad.
Description of Walk: Dimmingsdale and Ousal Dale should look lovely in the Autumn colours.
The majority of the walk is along magnificent drives built by the Earl of Shrewsbury in the 1800s, still in good condition. So we will be walking where fine carriages once carried gentry on pleasure trips. We head up Dimmingsdale to Greendale lane and the corner of Hawksmoor wood. The section down through Sutton’s wood can be wet. After that we are back on tarmac and good wide sandy/gravel tracks above Ousal Dale gradually dropping down to the café. The climbing up and down is gentle but we start at 330ft and reach 700ft half way round. There is a short cut which we can use if the weather is bad or if anyone wants to cut out about a mile and some climbing. There is only one stile but several cattle grids! There is the option after lunch of a short ¾ mile walk to see the chained oak (look up the legend about it and the Earl of Shrewsbury). It is really worth looking at the Ramblers Retreat website about the area.

Mainly over farmland, farm tracks & footpaths. Some stiles, mainly in quick succession near the start. Inevitably some muddy areas.
NB: Anchor Church will almost certainly be inaccessible following recent rain. Ground conditions will almost certainly result in revisions to the intended route to avoid some (not all!) of the muddiest terrain.
Source: Walk No. 19 in Charles Wildgoose's “Pub Walks in Derbyshire”; 2008 edition. Last walked on 13 November 2019 when some flooding near Willington prevented some cars getting through & we were unable to view Anchor Church because the Trent had burst its banks.

A Little about Biggin
Biggin is a village in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England. It is part of the Hartington Nether Quarter parish, and is in the Peak District National Park.
Biggin was once known as Newbiggin, when it had a monastic settlement of the Cistercian order, established by the monks of Garendon Abbey, Leicestershire. The monks established a sheep ranch at Biggin Grange, which still has one ancient outbuilding. Farming is still important to the village, though at one time (18th Century) it was also a centre of lead mining. When the lead started to be worked out, there was a migration of lead miners to Upper Teesdale, and they probably took the name Newbiggin there. Today tourism is an important industry alongside farming.

28th Sept 2022 Brassington Leader Malcolm Hall
On this circular walk we take in some of Brassington before ascending up Wirksworth Dale to the north of Carsington Pasture. There is a good first stopping point half way up the steep lane (if needed), with a couple of picnic benches. At the top of the Lane we head across fields towards Harboro Rocks, which is on the High Peak Trail. You may see some mountain climbers at Harboro Rocks but don't worry, it's not as challenging as it looks to reach the first level, and this part is an optional viewpoint. We do a 0.25 mile loop around the Rocks, then regroup and join the High Peak Trail again where we left it. A little further up the trail we cut across fields towards Carsington and arguably the best vista of the Reservoir that you'll ever see. The descent down to the Village is steep and care should be taken, particularly if it's very wet, but also if it's very dry as it's easy to lose footing on the gravel parts. Hiking poles are very useful for this descent. The walk continues out of Carsington village on a good track and an easy ascent up to Carsington Pasture. Across the top of the pasture there are good views of the Reservoir to the left, and Brassington Village ahead which we then take the descent back to. Some stiles, but not too challenging.
Food: Available afterwards at The Olde Gate Inne
14 Sept 2022 Yew Tree Cauldon Leader: Peter Worboys
Approximate Distance: 5 miles Approximate Duration of Walk: 2 hours 45 minutes
Circular walk northerly in close proximity to the River Hamps past New House Farm, Redmorlee Farm & Willow House before turning south to Cotton Grange, Birch Head & Limestone View Farm, finally turning east to Moor End & the pub. Generally at an elevation of 750'-1050' with no significant ascents or descents. Over lanes, tracks & pasture including 3 marshy (& therefore potentially wet & muddy) sections. Some sections are rarely (if ever) walked & therefore are somewhat uneven &/or overgrown with long reeds or uncut grass. 2 or 3 ditches to be crossed without too much difficulty. Some stiles in various states of repair. One 5 bar gate which has to be climbed over, but it is in a stable condition. A stick is recommended to offer stability through the overgrown less trodden areas.
Last walked on 19 October 2016. It was plotted by Peter from the OS Map to justify a visit to this interesting pub. Peter’s 2016 reconnaissance involved 2 trips & 7 hours, The walk is therefore being repeated so that all that time & effort spent planning can be justified. Be prepared for the unexpected!
Food is available afterwards at The Yew Tree Inn, a somewhat unique pub described as “a museum with a bar”; (see www.Yewtree). The pub is opening especially for us.
31 Aug 2022 Mapleton Leader Doug Billings - 5 miles - A circular walk following the river North to Coldwall Bridge. From here there is an ascent of about 85 metres to Coldwall Farm followed by a descent of 20 metres and a further ascent of 30 metres to Woodhouses. After this the route is fairly level to Martin Hill with the remainder of the walk downhill into Okeover Park and then back to the pub. There are some styles on this walk. Lunch Okeover Arms.
17 Aug 2022 Mayfield Leader: Philip Aitchison - 5.5 miles - Circular walk which will start from the Royal Oak at Hanging Gate.
First, we will walk up the short, but steep slope to Upper Mayfield, then turn left for 300 yards, then left again and proceed down a track called Slack Lane. We then cross the B5032 and head down to the west end of Church Mayfield and there turn right, to the south-west, and proceed across around 6 fields to a footbridge.
After crossing the footbridge, we walk to and then through Snelston, up till the church, where we turn north across a field, to the left of a large wood, then down a steep slope, then east across another meadow to the vicinity of Clifton. From there we head north-west across some more low-lying fields, back to the vicinity of the pub. There are some stiles [one stile is broken, which necessitates climbing the adjacent gate- not difficult] and parts of the walk are overgrown with nettles, thistles etc. so not really suitable for shorts, bare legs etc..
03 Aug 2022 Sycamore Inn Parwich Ian Jones: 4.8 miles Circular walk from Sycamore Inn NW through village then W past school. Footpath W and cross the Parwich Lees Road at Flaxdale Holding heading S. Turn right on footpath W and head to Parwich Lees. At Parwich Lees turn left, with a gradual climb, heading SW skirting N of woods. Left on footpath heading S towards Tissington Trail. Following the Limestone Way NE, over Bletch Brook, (Lowest point 569ft) back to Parwich and lunch at the Sycamore Inn.
20 July 2022 Lathkil Hotel - Over Haddon
Peter Worboys 5 miles A circular walk from the hotel, gradually descending to Alport with superb views south-east, returning gradually uphill along the opposite side of Lathkil Dale to Meadow Place Grange, & then dropping down into the dale where we hope to locate & follow a path eastwards along the northern bank of the river in order to find a less severe ascent back into the village than we did when we last did this walk on 26/11/14. Generally not too strenuous. Mainly over pasture and tracks. Some stiles.

6th July 2022 Winster Miners’ Standard. 3.5 miles - Circular walk with a lot of up and down – the total ascent being about 799 feet - & there are quite a few climbs up and down with stiles and some squeezes.
From the pub at 926 ft, we cross the B5056 and head down NE into the village past Wyns Tor and out again until we get to the pathway heading NE to and past Painter’s Way Farm at 543 ft.
Climbing N up, to 704 ft through the woodland to Greatclose where we turn directly E and down to 541 ft and into Clough Wood. Our lowest point. A left curve upwards to 876 ft and W through Clough Wood until we get to Clough Lane. Due W along Clough Lane until we arrive at a 4-ways before Uppertown Farm where we turn left and S past Ivy House on our right. Continue S down again to 623 ft, and back into Winster where we climb again turning right in the village to head W round the village with a final climb back up to the pub. A shorter walk than usual as the terrain, although not difficult or too steep, is steadily up and down so we can allow for some rests and build an appetite for lunch.
Food: Available afterwards at Miners’ Standard

08 June 2022 The Roaches 4.7 miles. Approximate Duration of Walk: 3 hours
Starting Point of Walk: Outside the Roaches Tea Room after menu choices have been handed in.
One of the great ridge walks of the Peak District with many different rock formations. Lovely views if the weather is clear but it is exposed and can be cold if it is windy. This was last walked 30/10/19. This time we are going the other way round and doing the steep climb first and then a gentle descent. The climb up to the ridge does involve some steep parts, about 400 ft up in only about 500m. There are about 100-150 rough steps in part of it. We can take our time doing the climb up. The total height climbed in the whole walk is 800 ft which is not dissimilar to some other walks. Once on the ridge the walk becomes flatter with gradual ups and downs on good paths, passed Doxey Pool where a malignant mermaid called Jenny Greenteeth lives, and on to the trig point at 505m (one of the Ethels). Continuing north on a well-made path we gradually descend to the road. This quiet road to the west of the roaches leads gradually down to the tea rooms. There are no stiles just gates.Food: Available afterwards at The Roaches Tea Room.

The walks are a lovely variety of woodlands with bluebells, some ponds, some meadow and some views of the reservoir. Bring binoculars if you want, on a recce walk we saw Grebes, Tufted ducks, Nuthatch and Tree Creepers. The paths are mainly dry and easy to walk on. It is mostly flat with gentle undulating paths; the biggest hill is only 100ft. There are no stiles. If anyone wanted to make the walk shorter there are several options. Even if you only did a 10-minute there-and-back stroll you would get to see bluebells.
Food is organised for 1.30pm at The Blyth Inn about 2 miles from the Blithfield reservoir car park. So, when we get back from the walk, we will leave in convoy to the Inn. You will be unable to access the menu by website because the previous proprietor retained ownership of the website.
