Knitted Poppies
You will Need:
- DK red yarn
- The size of the needles will determine the size of the poppy. Recommended: UK 9 or 3.5mm or 3.75mm. (If you use 4 needles or circular needles you will not have to join with Mattress Stitch).
- Black or dark green button or black yarn
1. Easy Garter Stitch Poppy - for beginners
- Cast on 120 stitches using the red yarn
Rows
- 1 - 4: Knit
- 5: Knit 3 stitches together across the row (40 stitches)
- 6 - 9: Knit
- 10: Knit 2 stitches together across the row (20 stitches)
- 11 - 14: Knit
- 15: Knit 2 stitches together across the row (10 stitches)
- Cut the yarn leaving a tail of about 20cm. Use a tapestry needle to slip the live stitches onto the yarn.
- Pull the yarn tight
- Use Mattress Stitch to join the edges.
- Sew in the ends.
2. Easy Ribbed Poppy Pattern
- Cast on 60 stitches using the red yarn
Rows
- 1-10: K2, P2, to the end of the row. (For a smaller poppy knit 8 rows instead of 10.)
- 11: Knit 2 stitches together across the row ( 30 stitches)
- 12: Slip 1 stitch. Knit 2 stitches together. Pass the slip stitch over. Continue to the end of the row (10 stitches).
- Break off the yarn with a long tail and thread it back through the 10 stitches. Pull it tight.
- Join the edges with Mattress Stitch.
Centre of Poppy
- Using the black wool cast on 16 stitches.
- Cast off.
- Coil into a tight spiral and sew it to the base of the poppy’s centre.
or
- Use a black or dark green button with 4 holes. Sew it to the centre.
