Media Category

  • There are lots of photos on the new website.  This is good.  We can write on our page about how friendly our group is - but  a photo of people enjoying themselves can often convey this information more powerfully. A picture is worth a thousand words.
  • You do not have to put photos on yourself.  You can ask someone from your Group to take this on - but there can only be one password per page and so it would mean sharing your password with another person.
  • There are 2 aspects of images need our attention:
    • the format
    • the storage

Format

  • There are 2 file types we’re likely to encounter: png (portable network graphic) and jpeg. (joint photographic expert group)
  • Any image that we upload contains this information.
  • No. 1 The red arrow is pointing to the file type.  This one is a jpeg. It’s what we want.
  • The .jpeg format is ideal for photos because there is a good balance between the image size and its quality.
  • The .png image format is used for logos, icons, charts, graphs and screenshots. When used for photos it results in excessively large files which will slow down page-loading for website visitors.
  • Please always use the jpeg format for your photographs

2.

You can convert any .png images to .jpeg prior to uploading. If you do not have the software to do this, there are many free online conversion services such as https://png2jpeg.com/

Storage

  • Images that we put onto our pages also go into the Media Library.  They stay there until we remove them.
  • It’s logical to think that if we delete them from our Group page that they will disappear from the website.  This is not the case.
  • Deleting is a 2 part process.
    • Delete the image from your page.
    • Remove it from the Media Library.
  • The Media Library must not become a storage facility.  If we are not going to use images again we must bin them.

However, there is a space where we can sort and store our own just for as long as they are needed.

It is called Media Categories.  ( No. 3)

It is a list of all our Groups - and any other pages on the website. (black arrow)  Yours is there somewhere.  You may need to scroll down to find it.

Please store your images in your own Media Category

No 4. (green arrow) Click here to show the images that have not been transferred to a Media Category - they are unassigned.  The ones that have been sorted (assigned) will disappear from the unassigned section.

If any of your images are still there then they need either putting into your Media Category or putting into the bin.

No 5. To put an image into your Media Category.

Select the image from the Media Library. (This example is going to go into the Cycling page.)

Give it a title  - this will make it easier for you to find.

Scroll down until the category appears (Cycling)

Tick the box.  (green Arrow).

Then select the X (blue arrow).  It will go into the chosen category.

  • No 6. To put something in the bin.
  • Select the image. (The example is a jigsaw)
  • You can check that it is one of yours - its category will have jumped to the top of the list - (black arrow) - you can’t delete someone else’s.
  • Scroll down to the bottom Delete permanently (red writing)

Please would you look at your own Media Category from time to time to see how many images you have accumulated.

  • Twice a year, end of May and December, I’m going to remove all the unassigned ones.  I’ll send out a reminder that I’m going to do this.
