Meetings in 2025

January 9th - The future of the defence of Europe if the USA withdraws its supportApril 10th -The Rev'd Arthur Champion challenged us to think again about climate change.
February 13th - Non-crime hate incidentsMay 8th - John Barnett looked at why many of our universities are in financial difficulties - closing courses and sacking staff. Is it sensible to discourage foreign students happy to pay £30k pa to study in the UK?
March 13th - Carbon monoxide kills - a member's personal experience. And in complete contrast - the history of Wokism.June 12th - After eight years David Holt is stepping back from leadership of the U3A Current Affairs group. He led the June meeting with a plea to remember history in order not to repeat past mistakes by going down the road of nationalistic populism which appears to be attracting significant attention at the moment both in the UK and elsewhere.
Volunteered to replace him is Bob Hodgson who has been an active member of the group since joining on his arrival in Ashbourne some seven years ago.
To assure continuity more than six members have agreed to lead future discussions during the coming year. As current affairs move with the times in the present rather chaotic circumstances it was agreed that topicality should be the main criterion for selecting each monthly subject for discussion rather than having a planned program.
We will continue meeting on the second Thursday of each month at 10am in Mayfield Memorial Hall. Our next meeting is on Thursday 10th July. Bob will lead the discussion on the current chaotic state of the world as it goes through a changing of the order leaving the hegemony of the USA in the past with plural competitive global power bases that are challenging the rule-based order established in the 1950’s that has guided international relations until recently. The subsequent meeting will be on 11th Sept after the summer break.
