Approximate 5-mile circular walk around Litton, starting and finishing at the Red Lion pub for lunch. Provisionally to be organised by our very own Peter W. Thank you Peter.

Starting Point: Approximately 10.20am from The Red Lion pub, Church Lane, Litton, SK17 8QU (SK162751) after arrival of the car pool & after menu selection. The pub does not have a car park but state that there is safe parking on the front, outside the school & on the road. Therefore, we ask that we all car-share from the Car Pool as much as possible. It is some distance from Ashbourne but nice for summertime & a quaint little pub with outdoor tables on the village green. We have only done it once before, 7 years ago.

Approximate Distance: 4.75 miles Approximate Duration of Walk: 2 hours 40 mins

Description of Walk: Circular walk from the pub located at an elevation of 1000' gradually descending eastwards for approx 1/2 mile along Mires Lane to join a path to Wardlow Mires, turning south generally along the bottom of Cressbrook Dale at an elevation of 725/775', passing beneath Peter's Stone, a prominent knoll, to almost reach Cressbrook after 3 miles, then ascending approx 150' over 1/4 mile partly along a lane to the western rim of the dale to return north over fields generally at an elevation of 950/1050' with no significant ascents or descents. Several stiles. Two shorter options are feasible in the event of bad weather. Route Map click Here. Q uite uneven & rocky down the dale & quite a few stiles over stone walls on the return to the village.

Source: Partly based upon “Family Walks” (1995 edition) with an additional 3/4 mile plotted from the OS map.

Food is available afterwards at The Red Lion. Current Menu click Here

About Litton: Litton is a village and civil parish in the Peak District of Derbyshire, England. The population at the 2011 Census was 675. It is one mile from Tideswell and six miles from Bakewell. The village has a primary school, a public house (the Red Lion) and a post office run by a co-operative of villagers. There are two churches, one at the east end of the village, and Christ Church at the west, on the outskirts of the village on the road to Tideswell. Litton has a well dressing each summer. The display is set on a base of moist clay and the patterns formed from petals, seeds, mosses and lichens. Wikipedia
